れまでのマーケティングの目的は、企業側のメッセージを消費者に伝える、ということだった。それはマスメディア全盛時代もそうだったし、インターネット時代になってオンライン広告、オンラインマーケティングの利用が広がってきた今日でもだいたい同じじゃないかと思う。マーケッターの多くは、自分たちのメッセージをどうすれば効率的に伝えられるか、ばかりを考えているように見受けられる。 　
しかしソーシャルメディアの時代に移行しようとする中で、マーケティングの目的は、メッセージを伝えることから、消費者の声を聞くこと、消費者との関係を強化することに変わりつつあるのではないかと思う。
